What is the advantage of climate control?
Temperature extremes, and even frequent temperature changes, can damage many types of materials, including leather, plastic and wood because of excess humidity. U-Store-It maintains a constant temperature in your unit to better protect your property.
Should I insure my stored items?
Whether you are planning to store business or personal belongings. It’s important to insure them. Items in self-storage are usually notcovered by other policies such as homeowners or rental insurance.
Should I store my items in boxes?
Using boxes to store your items keeps your unit neat and tidy and adds another layer of protection from light, dust and other pollutants. It is a good idea to avoid overloading boxes. Don’t pack more into a box than you can comfortably lift and be sure to clearly label each box so you don’t have to go searching for items that you need later.
How can I take advantage of available space?
Many large items can be disassembled for easier storage. For example, a bed frame can be taken apart and the pieces taped together. Place any screws or small parts in a plastic bag and attach them to the frame with strong tape.Boxes can be stacked to free up space. Be sure to place boxes of heavy items such as books or tools on the bottom of the stack to provide a stable base.
What kind of things should I not place in storage?
You should never store anything flammable, explosive or toxic in your storage unit. This means no gasoline, oil, firearms, cleaning fluids or paint thinner. If you’re storing any machinery that runs on gas, drain the tank before you store it. This will also prevent the build-up of nasty fumes that can transfer odours to your other items.
Here are a few general tips that will make moving your items into storage less stressful:
1. Store items you’ll need most often at the front of the unit.
2. Use trash cans to store yard tools such as rakes, shovels, brooms, etc.
3. Mattresses should be protected by a breathable cover (to avoid mouldiness).
4. Wipe down metal items with an oily cloth before storing them to prevent rust.
5. Look before you book. We’d be happy to show you around the facilities before you book.
